BY BOB MASSEY Florida Weekly Correspondent The enthusiasm of Mark and Kathy Kemeny is infectious when talking about their business, Just Counters & Other Stuff Inc. — JCAOS — 1489 Market Circle #309, Port Charlotte (jcaos.com). JCAOS does a whole lot of “other stuff,” including home remodeling and new construction. (Mark is a licensed contractor.) It’s a long way from how the company started. “I was in the cabinet business already,” Mark said. “My wife and I had just gotten married, and we were looking for something to do on the weekends.” Starting in an 800-square-foot unit in 2002, the business took off. After a year, they purchased three 800-square-foot units, thinking it was way more space than they needed. But now, JCAOS takes up 11 units, and does most of the work on site, thanks to the couple reinvesting in the business — which also kept them from having to lay off employees during the economic downturn. Last year was the best ever, Mark said, and this year JCAOS is already at 40 percent of last year’s income — and it’s only February. The company offers some very cool, cutting-edge products, such as “tech tops,” countertops upon which you can rest your smartphone to recharge. They also stock “inset” cabinets — with doors built in to the frame so they don’t protrude — popular in Naples and Sarasota, Mark said. They also offer a “soft close” system of hydraulics that prevents doors and drawers from slamming shut. “We have a product for everybody’s needs because there’s no one product that’s going to suit everybody,” Mark added. “There are no sales here, there’s no high pressure. Don’t be bullied into buying your cabinets. You’re not saving in the long run.
